Walter Eli Bates (87) of Clinton passed away March 3, 2026, at 6:00 PM, at Vermillion Convalescent Center. Born in Whiting, Indiana on October 25, 1938, to Paul Bates and Bonnie Edson Bates.
He married Sharon Kerrigan on August 8, 1959.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon, on January 29, 2026, and his daughter, Debora, on August 17, 1924, and one sister, Laura Gray
He retired as an office manager from Inland Steel.
Survived by his daughter; Kathy (Mike) Bates of Clinton and his son Michael (Shannon) Bates of Hobart. Five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Four sisters. Janice Berwanger of Calumet City, IL, Bonnie Stanley of Bourbonnias, IL, Mary Young of Florida and Diane Bates of Lake Village, IN. Several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen with a celebration of life at a later date.
