Patricia Brown Obituary

   Patricia Ann Brown passed away at October 19, 2019 at 6:45 AM in Terre Haute, Indiana.  Born in Clinton, Indiana to G. Earl and Nema Carlin Brown she was a graduate of Noblesville High School and held a B.S. degree from the School of Business, and an M.S. from the School of Education at Indiana University.   While completing doctoral course work and exams at Indiana University, she was a Teaching Associate in Education Psychology, teaching undergraduate Educational Psychology and Graduate Research in the School of Education.  Also, she directed educational tours to Mexico.   While teaching in the public school of Wayne Township and serving as Reading consultant in Pike Township, Mrs. Brown directed tours to Hawaii, New York City, the Rose Bowl and Las Vegas for Indiana National, Merchants’ National Banks and First Bank and Trust in Indianapolis.  During her 40- year teaching career, she taught in Clinton, Elkhart, and Hamilton County school retiring from the Vigo County Schools in Terre Haute in 1990.  While competing her master’s degree, Patricia taught emotionally handicapped children and served as a psychotherapist at LaRue D. Carter Hospital at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.  As a licensed doctoral-level reading specialist and school psychologist she had two reading and learning disability clinics; one was on the grounds of Alverna and the other in her home at Clayton, Indiana in 1974 and 1975.  When IU/PUI opened, she taught reading methods courses there and at Indiana University, Indianapolis. 

   A pioneer in Indiana in the filed of special education, she worked to get state and federal legislation passed to serve the needs of special children.   As a teacher, community worker, and psychologist, she worked for the Katherine Hamilton Learning Center in 1977 and 1978.  In Vigo County she taught at Fayette, Consolidated, Woodrow Wilson and retired as a first-grade teacher at Devaney.

   Patricia was a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association; Phi Mu Fraternity; and was a member of Pi Lambda Theta graduate scholastic honorary at Indiana University; the Vigo County Retired Teachers’ Association; Indiana Retired Teachers’ Association; Paul Mill Country Club in Largo, Florida; and Kappa Kappa Kappa as an inactive member in Terre Haute; and Sigma Delta Pi teachers’ social sorority in Indiana.  She belonged to the St. Joseph University Parish Church in Terre Haute and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Largo, Florida.  

   Mrs. Brown is survived by a granddaughter Sheree Summers of Avon;  a cousin, Lynn C. Murray, Florida, and cousins Linda Brown West and Charles Allen Brown, of Terre Haute; adoptive nieces Rebecca Jackson of Monticello; Mary Kelly, Lebanon; Jane Carter, Glen Ellyn, Illinois; adoptive nephews, Kevin Diener, and Mark Diener, Monticello; Christopher Diener, Lafayette; and their mother Ruth Diener of Monticello; Lifelong friend, Betty Crousore Williams of Greencastle and her beloved cat, Chessie Lee.

   Visitation will be held in Terre Haute, Indiana at St. Joseph University Parish, October 23, 2019, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM.   Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM, St. Joseph Church, Terre Haute, October 23, 2019  with Friar Cyprian Uline officiating, with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park.  

   It is suggested that donation in lieu of flowers be made to the Humane Shelter of your choice, Hospice of Terre Haute or any organization which helps needy children.
